Über den Autor William Golding

William Golding (19.9.1911 St. Columb-Minor - 19.6.1993) war britischer Schriftsteller und erlangte mit seinem Roman »Lord of the Flies« (dt. »Herr der Fliegen«) große Berühmtheit. Widerwillig studierte der literarisch interessierte Golding Naturwissenschaften, danach englische Literatur in Oxford. Er lehrte in Salisbury Englisch und diente während des Zweiten Weltkriegs als Marineoffizier. Nach einem Jahr als »Writer in residence« in Virginia entschied er sich für die Laufbahn als freier Schriftsteller. Sein größter Erfolg gelang Golding mit dem 1954 erschienen Roman »Lord of the Flies«, der zuvor unter dem Titel »Strangers from within« von Verlagen mehrfach abgelehnt wurde. An den Erfolg dieses Werks konnte keines seiner danach veröffentlichten Werke - darunter Romane, Dramen, Essays und Reiseberichte - anknüpfen. Golding wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet: 1966 Ritterorden Commander of the British Empire; 1980 Man Booker Prize für seinen Roman »Rites of Passages« (dt. »Äquatortaufe«); 1983 Literaturnobelpreis; 1988 der Titularadelstitel Knight Bachelor.
