Alison wurde in Dunedin, Neuseeland, geboren. Doch die Schule besuchte sie in London, weil ihr Vater, ein Arzt, aus beruflichen Gründen nach England ging. Später zogen sie nach Washington. Nach längerer Zeit im Ausland kehrte die Familie zurück nach Dunedin, wo Alison dann zur Grundschullehrerin ausgebildet wurde. Sie fand eine Stelle als Lehrerin im Norden des Landes, wo sie ihren Traummann kennenlernte, der einen Wirbelsturm aus romantischen Gefühlen in ihr auslöste. Der Sturm gipfelte in der Hochzeit mit dem jungen Doktor und jetzigen Professor Mark. Es folgten zwei Jahre in Glasgow, Schottland. In dieser Zeit vollendete sie ihren ersten Roman - einen Medizinthriller mit einer ordentlichen Portion Romantik. Mit der Rückkehr nach Neuseeland begann ein neues turbulentes Kapitel in ihrem Leben, in dem sich alles darum drehte, sich um ihre kleine Tochter zu kümmern, ein altes Farmhaus zu renovieren, einen großzügigen Garten zu gestalten und ihre kleine Menagerie - Esel, Schafe, Hühner, Hunde und Katzen - zu versorgen. Neben ihrem Zuhause, der Familie und dem Schreiben engagiert sich Alison leidenschaftlich beim Rettungsdienst. Bei dieser Arbeit erhält sie viele Anregungen für ihre Arztromane. Die aufregenden Stunden im Einsatz und die Rettung von Patienten bilden den perfekten Ausgleich für die einsamen Stunden des Schreibens.
